Burning the Brash piles and mowing the steep steep orchard and fields!!

The first weekend of half term was spent starting to mow the fields and finally getting rid of brash piles that have been the bane of our fire lighting lives all winter!!! We seem to have cracked the fire lighting now though thanks to a lot of newspaper, breaking the piles down a bit and a flame thrower thingummy Bob that means we can light the paper more centrally to the brash heaps!!

And the mowing …. Wow that was hard work but we mowed the fields in three days!!!! Far shorter than the weeks of weed and bramble hacking we did last year!!! Upkeep is definitely quicker!!!!

And all of our 46 trees have taken!!!!!!!

Whilst digging out all the brash from the weeds James also discovered another skull….. So here is what wooly beasts (sheep) look like on the inside!!

Tree planting!

Finally not a post about us destroying stuff, hacking something back or levelling something!!! Something productive…. Or it will be when they grow!!!

46 fruit trees planted staked and thanks to the rain watered in!!!! Planted in the lea of the hill to shelter them a little and up enough out of the frost pocket I hope!!!

So apples, plums, damsons, pears of all sorts of types!!! Mmmmmmm can’t wait to see them in leaf and blossom!!!

More bramble destruction to start the new year

I have been hedge cuttering my way round the brambles in new orchard field and have now completed the first chop of the brambles in what will be our orchard….. And it’s HUGE!!!! We decided I must have cut about ten time a the size of our home garden in bramble patch!!!

Before…..

Giant field!!! With orchard, willow and hazel growing opportunities in its future!!!! Hurrah!!!!

More bramble destruction!

Whilst James played with the beast!!! I hacked down some more chunks of the bramble patches along the pipe stream bank and into the woodland!!! Got a big chunk done too not that it shows from the top of the hill, because it went down the side and around the back of the colossal patch to allow the beast to be able to travel through the patch and then turn and complete the bramble munching!!

As well as the building work last weekend James hired a mini digger (too mini for the job he wanted it for as it turned out)

As I left to go into cardigan to look at tiles he was a happy husband playing diggers and building a path down into orchard field from the yard!

Upon my return…..

A digger minus the treads on one side!!

Luckily our neighbour at the top of the hill used to work on diggers so he came up and fixed it…..

James had about another hour or two of digger play before it happened again…

He gave up! And luckily our neighbour came back just before we left to fix it again before it had to go back to the hire company!
